HATE EXERCISE? 5 Simple Tips for Changing the Way You Think About Exercise

Physical activity can do wonders for our mental health. In fact, just 20-30 minutes of exercise a WEEK can significantly reduce anxiety and depression, and improve sleep. Here are a few tips to help you make physical activity a positive part of your life:

1. Set Simple Goals

Making your New Year’s resolution to look like that super fit influencer you follow on social media may not be the best idea. Instead, aim for exercising a few minutes a day on most (or even just some) days.

2. Engage in Positive Self-Talk

If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up about it. If you are sore after doing 2 push-ups the day before, instead of focusing on how “out of shape” you are, be proud of yourself for working muscles you haven’t used in a while.

3. Be Flexible

Have a variety of exercises you can use in different scenarios. For example, if it’s a gorgeous day, then do some yard work. If it’s raining out, put on a 5-minute yoga video from YouTube. If the kids won’t give you 5 minutes of free time, bench press your toddler.

4. Change Your Perception

Focus on how you feel, not what you look like. Pay attention to how your body and mind relaxes after a workout. That is the true beauty of exercise.

5. Have Fun!

You are more likely to repeat something you enjoy, so pick activities that are fun for you.
