Kathy O’Brien

PsyD

I am a Licensed Psychologist in Maryland. I have worked in a private practice setting for over 20 years with clients of all ages; however, I now focus primarily on adults ages 25 to 85. (As a “late bloomer” myself, I know that growth and change is possible at all stages of life!) While I have experience with a wide range of diagnoses and concerns, I find it especially gratifying to help others who are struggling with grief, loss, and major life transitions such as parenting, an empty nest, divorce, declining health, assuming a caretaker role for aging parents, and end of life challenges. I work to create a caring, supportive and safe therapeutic relationship as the foundation to foster changes that clients often feel overwhelmed and hopeless to make on their own. My approach is individualized to meet the needs and preferences of each unique client, utilizing theories and interventions drawn from psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and existential therapeutic frameworks. Using a systems theory lens, I also help clients explore how extrinsic influences, from familial stereotypes to institutional discrimination, affect their well-being. My goal is to collaborate with clients to achieve their goals, and to develop the awareness and tools to live their lives fully, adapting to and even embracing challenges as they arise.

Professional Experience

I obtained my B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland and my Psy.D. from the Graduate School of Professional Psychology at the University of Denver. Prior to working in a private practice setting, I refined my skillset as a clinician while practicing at a hospice, a community counseling center, a veterans’ hospital, a community program for the chronically mentally ill, an inpatient hospital unit for dissociative disorders, a university counseling center, and a community alternative to psychiatric hospitalization. My career focus has been to continually develop and fine-tune the craft and skills of providing psychotherapy through ongoing training, consultations, and a commitment to my own personal growth.

Life Outside the Office

My little family consists of a wonderful husband and adult son, as well as our cuddly, goofy Bernedoodle, Hobbes. I treasure my morning cup of coffee with my husband, late-night conversations with my son, going to the beach, and long walks with close friends (and Hobbes, of course).
